Trip to Ladonia:
On Saturday,Marc and I decided to take a day trip to Ladonia ( about an hour and half drive from Dallas) to hunt for fossils. We left at 8 am and began our journey into the wild and back in time. I will say that you pass a lot cows..and more cows, and tractors, but over all it's a nice scenic route to the location. On our excursion we managed to find a fossilized sharks tooth and a large crustacean of some sort. Marc and I are far from home bodies and personally get enjoyment from traveling and taking adventures, even if its just an hour drive out of town to hike. For us getting outdoors is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of living in Downtown Dallas and working 50 hours a week behind a computer screen. I highly recommend taking a day trip to Ladonia and exploring the river beds even if just for a few hours. As for us, we will be heading to Paris, Texas tomorrow in search of geodes. If you're interested in following our lead and taking a day trip for some hiking make sure you are prepared and have the proper material! Check my list before you leave for your hiking essentials.
- Hiking boots, steal toe if possible.
- On a budget? Try Walmart's steal toe work shoes. Only $35!
- Water and lots of it!
- I prefer Camelbaks because they are easy to carry and can hold the up to 3 liters of water. Purchase this one for $55 here.
Snacks that are high in calories, compact, and fast to prepare.

Map & Compass (optionally supplemented with a GPS receiver)
In most cases you will lose cell phone reception so make sure you can find your way back home.
Knife or Machete
The wilderness has wild animals and thick shrubbery, make sure you can protect yourself and cut through tall grass or vines.
I shouldn't have to explain this to you but you will get sunburned if you don't protect your skin.
Once again its always good to be prepared, you may fall in mud or a river and when that happens extra socks or a clean shirt may come in handy.
Into The Wild We Go
I'd rather be a forest than a street. Yes I would, if I could, I surely would. I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet. Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would.
